I love this idea! I just took down my vision board for 2011 (didn't do one this year) and noticed that a lot of what was on there had to do with life balance, i.e. leisure activities rather than work, but it was more "generic" stuff like walking, cooking, etc. I love the idea of a board of "stuff to do in my spare time" because if it's right there on my wall, I won't forget about it! That's why I don't think Pinterest would work for this, for me anyway.

It's so subtle, isn't it Nancy? And in the same way, as mom/dad pull the household together and get things and time more organized, the kids (& partner/spouse) DO notice. Sometimes it's unspoken, but they do see a difference.

I believe that children are paying attention and receiving cues subconsciously from their parents. That said, it is so important to "lead by example."

The greatest takeaway that generally comes from after working with a client is that their kids want their rooms to look "just like mommys." One of my favorite comments recently came from a 5 year old boy... when I asked what "organizing" meant to him, he replied, "it means making more space." Interesting that he noticed that our sessions were more about the end result i.e. creating MORE space than it was about just organizing Mom's stuff. Out of the mouth of babes!

Isn't it! Stacey - I just popped over to your latest blog entry: http://organizedartistry.blogspot.com/2012/05/professional-organizer-makes.html and I love your "appointments with myself" idea. Fits right in with my blog/newsletter theme this month of having more 'balance' in one's life. You can't have balance if you don't know what you want. And then when you know what you want, you need to create and keep your time (appointment!) with yourself. Very nice, Thanks.

Great tips, Sue. I have an almost 6 yr old and a 2 yr old and I have been slowly incorporating basic organizing skills into their lives. You're right--organizing is a life skill. It permeates different parts of our lives--career, relationships, home life, etc. So important to start early with kids!

This is definitely the best list of time management tips I've seen. Thank you for them.

If all else fails, an old-fashioned loud alarm clock will jar you out of concentration on activity that needs to be completed.

Janet, you're such a consistent commenter; I admire that! And appreciate your comment: so true, as well as the parent needing more patience, flexibility and sometimes creativity in order to support their child in ways his/her brain is wired. So true - what a great point you make!

I've found that kids with a similar personality to the parent's are much more apt to emulate what they see. When the brain is wired differently, they need much more precise instructions and guidance.
